The Pavee and the Buffer Girl
Longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2018
Winner of the Premio Orbil 2019
Empathy Lab ‘Read for Empathy’ list 2019
The Pavee & the Buffer Girl was the late and greatly missed Siobhan Dowd’s first published work and I was honoured to be asked by Barrington Stoke to help create a new, beautifully illustrated edition of this story for a YA audience.
Since the book was published in March 2017, I have been invited to put on events at Hay Festival, Edinburgh Festival and in schools, working with storyteller and singer Geraldine Bradley. Together we bring the story to life for audiences of children and adults through reading, singing and live-drawing. The book has been longlisted for the Kate Greenaway medal and chosen for Empathy Lab’s Read for Empathy list 2019.
“The protagonists in my stories aren’t human rights heroes in the conventional sense. They are ordinary people…who find extraordinary ways to overcome the difficulties in their lives and for me that’s the essence of any good story…” – Siobhan Dowd
